The Bluenose II

The Bluenose II, flying The Maple Leaf:

Launched from Lunenburg July24 1963, The Bluenose II sails as Goodwill Ambassador for Canada's East coast Province of Nova Scotia, and is operated by the Bluenose II Preservation Trust. ( URL: http://www.bluenose2.ns.ca/ ) The Gaff Topsail Schooner was built to the original plans in the same yard as the famous fishing schooner Bluenose, with slight modifications to the crew's accommodations and additional communication and navigation equipment.

The original Bluenose was built in 1921 and became a famous competitor for 17 years in the International Fisherman's Trophy Races between Canada and the U.S.A. The ship's likeness has been proudly displayed on Canada's stamps and coins over the years. Despite the protests of her Skipper, The Bluenose was sold in 1942 to carry freight in the West Indies. In 1955 both Captain Angus Walters and Bluenose were inducted into the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame to honour their racing achievements.

Fast and graceful, with a top speed of 16 knots Bluenose II's red oak hull is painted a dignified black. Masts of Douglas Fir support 11,696 square feet of sail above her 143 foot spotless deck, where mahogany gleams under many coats of varnish on the deck latches and structures. The massive brass ship's-wheel appears to face backwards, until one realizes that the Helmsman stands to one side of it and faces forwards. For those interested, the ships Specs. are to be found at: http://www.bluenose2.ns.ca/english/specs.html

Bluenose II will dock in Port Colborne from July 4 to July 9 for the Tall Ships "SAILabration 2001", and sail from there to Cleveland, Ohio to stay from July 11 until July 16th. The Schooner will celebrate her 38th. Birthday on July 24th. in Sarnia, Ontario.
